Flesh And Blood Show

Flesh And Blood Show

As I pour thru the collected works of director Pete Walker and his continued demonstrations of how NOT to make a British horror movie, I was struck by the fact that this film actually had a not-so-bad screenplay and concept, however Walker’s stodgy style of directing drags it down to the level of boring crap. The plot concerns a group of actors (and an egregious producer) gathered at an old theater on a pier under the auspices of a shady production company that we eventually learn does not even exist. With the actors hanging around with no reps from the theatre company and not even a script to work with, they decide to start improvising their own show instead. Amazingly, when members of the troupe start disappearing and / or turning up dead, they nonetheless carry on instead of doing the sensible thing which is get the fuck out of Dodge and go home. As for the murders, just about all of them take place offscreen, so for those expecting a gory bloodbath (especially after looking at the poster), you will be sorely disappointed. Gratefully, there IS a copious amount of nudity from the female cast members, at least enough to keep you awake for the first hour or so, and as for the cast, Jenny Hanley is nice to look at as the “famous” actress among the group, plus there’s a number of small time British TV actors like Robin Askwith and Tristen Rogers, but mostly the performers here are all a blur. An extended flashback (originally shot in 3-D) towards the end tries to help explain things, and features a shocking bit of a couple having naked sex in front of an underage girl, but as I said, what could have been a good movie in the hands of a talented director goes to waste with Walker’s usual sluggish pacing, making us wait seemingly forever before things get going. In addition, the “big twist” of the story can be identified from a mile away, but when the killer is revealed and proceeds to go on a rant about how the decadence of the acting profession leads to temptation and debauchery, it really makes the viewer sit back and ponder what could have been. In the end, some good ideas and T&A, but ultimately it’s undone by the incompetence and unneeded restraint of the man credited as the director…
